Radio Kerry reported that Dr Ann Nolan, a professor at Trinity College, spoke before an Oireachtas committee on November 3, 2026. She stated that an ongoing housing crisis threatens the survival of Irish as a community language in the West Kerry Gaeltacht. [1]
According to Radio Kerry, Dr Nolan explained that local residents believe the Gaeltacht faces a risk of no longer existing in 50 years unless the government intervenes. She emphasized that the housing problem in the area has been building for several years. [1]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, short-term lets and holiday homes outnumber permanent residences in the central Corca Dhuibhne Gaeltacht. House prices on the Dingle Peninsula have outpaced local incomes, leading to concerns that residents are being priced out. A Gaeltacht is an Irish district recognized by the government where Irish is the predominant spoken language, an official status first introduced in the 1920s. [3][5]
In separate local property developments, Radio Kerry reported that Sammy’s Restaurant and Beach Bar or Café in Inch recently sold for over its asking price of 950,000 euros. The property was established in 1987, acquired by the Kilkenny Group in 2019, and placed on sale in 2023. [2]
