Trade unions and public workers across France organized nationwide strikes and demonstrations on Thursday, demanding government assistance for households struggling with high living costs. France 24 and Reuters both report that the European country is bracing for fresh protests as President Emmanuel Macron seeks to manage social unrest following weeks of demonstrations. [1][2][3][5][6][8]

A Paris court approved an alternative protest route late Wednesday, according to France 24. The approved route runs between Place de la République and Place de la Nation after being proposed by the police prefecture. [1]

Demonstrations against economic and school conditions have taken place across France since September 2026. As FTMQ News reported earlier, French protests initially began in Creteil on 18 September 2026 over fuel prices and living costs. In early October, student and worker demonstrations broadened into a nationwide movement involving an estimated 550,000 to 800,000 participants. [7][9]

President Emmanuel Macron is seeking to prevent a repeat of widespread unrest that occurred in October, as FTMQ News reported earlier. The nationwide demonstrations take place five months before the upcoming French presidential election. [2][3][8]
