European natural gas benchmark prices rose above 100 euros per megawatt-hour on Wednesday afternoon, reaching a level not recorded since December 2022. Euronews, The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, Bloomberg, TradingView, MTV Lebanon, and Euronext Markets all reported the price surge. The Wall Street Journal noted that energy markets are reacting to fears of renewed escalation between the United States and Iran. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
Hours before the price milestone was reached, European Union Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen warned that Europe faces another energy crisis and a difficult winter, according to Euronews. The benchmark price level was last seen at the height of the energy crisis that followed the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Euronews reported. [1]
Concerns over Middle East stability follow recent warnings regarding the region. As FTMQ News reported earlier, a senior United Nations official previously warned of potential global food security issues tied to stalled United States and Iran negotiations regarding fertiliser shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
