The European Commission has insisted that the Nord Stream gas pipeline will not reopen after the war in Ukraine ends, Euronews reported. Brussels is pushing back against a joint attempt by Washington and Moscow to revive the project. European Commission official Paula Pinho stated that the European Union knows the hidden costs of depending on Russia for fossil fuels. [1]
Germany has also ruled out restarting Nord Stream 2 and declared that Russia is an unreliable partner, according to The New Voice of Ukraine. The underwater pipeline stretches over 1,200 kilometres to connect Germany and Russia, but it remains under European Union sanctions. [1][2]
Nord Stream 1 became operational in 2011 and 2012, while Nord Stream 2 was completed in September 2021. German regulators suspended the certification of Nord Stream 2 in February 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Three of the four pipeline sections were destroyed by underwater explosions on September 26, 2022. [1][3][5]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, a Ukrainian citizen identified as Serhii K went on trial in Hamburg, Germany, accused of participating in a Ukrainian military conspiracy to sabotage the pipelines. [5]
