European gas prices reach four year high ahead of winter

European natural gas prices have risen to their highest level in nearly four years as Middle East conflict disrupts shipping and low storage levels fuel supply fears.

European natural gas prices rose to their highest level in nearly four years on Tuesday, according to reports by Euronews and The Wall Street Journal. The surge comes as escalating conflict and attacks in the Middle East threaten energy supplies and low storage reserves raise fears of winter shortages across the continent. [1][3]

Euronews reported that Dutch TTF benchmark gas futures reached €87.20 per megawatt-hour. This is an increase from approximately €32 recorded on the eve of the Iran war. Conflict in the Middle East has disrupted shipping passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a maritime route that normally carries about one fifth of the global supply of liquefied natural gas. [1]

The price spikes add to widespread concerns over winter energy costs for European households, Euronews reported. Additional reports from The Wall Street Journal noted that low gas reserves and uncertain supplies from the Gulf are forcing Europe to face potential global competition for energy shipments heading into the colder months. [1][2][3]

The situation follows warnings about low European Union gas reserves. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the European Union may need to reduce its gas consumption by 7 percent this winter because storage levels reached their lowest seasonal point since 2011, which could force the bloc to use 14 billion cubic metres less gas than last winter.
