European Union leaders are pressing the European Commission to take coordinated action to manage high energy costs, Euronews reported. Following late night negotiations at a European Council summit on Thursday, national leaders asked for targeted, temporary measures to support struggling households and businesses. [1]
According to Euronews, the energy crisis is putting pressure on national budgets and testing the climate goals of the European Union. Leaders specifically asked for extended financial aid for heavy industries that face severe pressure from rising fuel costs. The report added that officials also raised serious concerns about the ongoing security of energy supplies across the continent. [1]
Energy price pressures are already impacting member states in different ways. As FTMQ News reported earlier, high fuel prices linked to the war in Iran contributed to a 4.1 per cent drop in greenhouse gas emissions in France during the first half of 2026. To cope with the costs, France announced plans to reduce fuel prices by 12 to 18 centimes per litre from 1 November by using its strategic oil reserves. [1][3]
In short
- EU leaders demanded temporary, targeted European Commission measures to lower soaring energy costs.
- Summit talks ran late into Thursday night over concerns regarding energy security and industry impacts.
- France previously announced fuel price cuts of 12 to 18 centimes per litre starting 1 November.
