The trial of a Ukrainian citizen accused of attacking the Nord Stream undersea gas pipelines in 2022 opened in Hamburg, Germany, on Wednesday. UPI and DW both reported that the suspect faces charges in a German court over the sabotage of the infrastructure supplying Russian gas to Europe. [1][4][6]

UPI reported that the defendant is Serhii K, a Ukrainian special forces officer. He is charged with being part of a military conspiracy to destroy the 17 billion dollar project in a state-sponsored effort to deprive Moscow of gas revenues. According to DW, three of the four sections of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines were blown up on September 26, 2022, near the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. [1][4]

Nord Stream consists of offshore natural gas pipelines running under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany. DW reported that the proceedings raise questions about the possible role of Kyiv in the explosions and put German support for Ukraine under increased scrutiny. [4][13]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Kyiv earlier this month to pledge support for Ukraine. DW reported that the opening of the trial coincides with an expected major policy statement from Chancellor Merz. [6][17]
