Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk declared during a Saturday night television address that he will proceed with a planned overhaul of the country's Constitutional Tribunal. The Guardian and Bloomberg both reported that Tusk remained firm despite overnight protests outside the court building in Warsaw. Reuters and the Guardian reported that the Polish president accused Tusk of attempting a forced takeover of the top court. [1][5][10]

The Guardian reported that riot police were deployed to protect the court building during the overnight demonstrations. According to Ukrayinska Natsionalna Novyny, opposition figures initiated a motion of no confidence in Tusk's government as political tensions heightened across the country. UkrMedia News reported that the standoff has placed Tusk's administration under threat of a broader political crisis. [1][2][4]

Tusk stated during his address that there can be no compromise regarding the court reform, which he called necessary to restore a tribunal crippled by years of political disputes. The Guardian reported that the Constitutional Tribunal has been paralyzed for over a decade and lies at the center of Poland's rule-of-law debate. As FTMQ News reported earlier, police secured the tribunal building following the suspension of two senior judges. [1][14][15]

Tusk has served as the prime minister of Poland since 2023, having previously held the office from 2007 to 2014, and is the longest-serving prime minister of the Third Polish Republic. The Telegraph and Bloomberg both reported that Tusk's government faces ongoing opposition from the presidency as the dispute over judicial appointments continues. [3][10][12]
