Citizen environmentalists in Devon have created an online platform to track sewage spills into the River Dart in real time, the Guardian reported. The platform flags active sewage discharges as they occur and highlights locations along the waterway that suffer from repeated pollution. Local residents living along the river had faced ongoing sewage spills blighting the waterway. [1]
The River Dart rises on Dartmoor, where the East Dart River near Cranmere Pool and the West Dart River near Two Bridges meet at Dartmeet. The river flows 75 kilometres southward to the sea at Dartmouth, passing Buckfast Abbey near Buckfastleigh, Totnes, and the Sharpham Estate. [2][4]
The river becomes tidal at Totnes before expanding into the Dart Estuary, a drowned valley with steep wooded slopes and mudflats. The estuary extends roughly 10 kilometres inland. The area was designated as a Marine Conservation Zone in 2019. [4]
Devon has a low population density of about 184 people per square kilometre. The regional economy depends heavily on tourism and agriculture, with tourism generating over 2 billion pounds annually and supporting more than 30,000 jobs. Agriculture accounts for 13 percent of the local economy, including livestock value exceeding 1 billion pounds. [5]
