Hackers targeted hundreds of French supermarket cold aisles shortly before midnight last Sunday by remotely overriding digital thermostat settings. According to the Guardian, temperatures in thousands of freezers, fridges, and chiller cabinets were forced up from as low as -27C to well over 50C. [1]
The Guardian described the cyberattack as unprecedented and bizarre. The extreme temperature changes lasted over four to six hours, leaving stores with a mountain of waste after frozen and chilled food began cooking inside the units. [1]
It is not yet known who carried out the intrusion, with possibilities ranging from young hackers testing their skills to state-sponsored sabotage. The report noted that France has become the most hacked country in Europe. [1]
France has a population of 68.6 million people as of January 2025. Its capital and largest city is Paris. [3]
