A fast-spreading wildfire in Southern California has destroyed several coastal homes and forced residents to evacuate, according to reports from Al Jazeera, ABC News Australia, and NBC News. The Norte Fire, which is burning in Orange County, has engulfed expensive coastal properties and damaged at least six structures in the San Juan Capistrano area, ABC News Australia and Al Jazeera both report. [1][4][5]

Authorities differ on the total size of the burn area. The Orange County Fire Authority reported that the Norte Fire had scorched approximately 188 hectares or 465 acres, while the state Cal Fire agency estimated that the blaze had grown to around 231 hectares or 570 acres by Friday evening, Al Jazeera reported. ABC News Australia said that more than 500 firefighters were aggressively fighting the fire on the ground and from the air. [1][4]

The fires are being fueled by intense warm winds and unseasonably high temperatures, Al Jazeera reported. KTLA reported that the season's first Santa Ana wind event raised extreme fire danger, prompting a Red Flag Warning across Southern California. Regional utilities also turned off electrical power for many residents to mitigate fire risk, according to AP News and KTLA. [1][6][7]

Southern California features a Mediterranean climate where dry conditions combined with Santa Ana winds regularly heighten the risk of wildfires, according to Grokipedia background information. The region includes coastal counties such as Orange, Los Angeles, and Ventura. [10][11]
