Carney and Trump report progress on trade deal to end tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Sunday that he had a good conversation on trade with United States President Donald Trump. UPI and CTV News both report that negotiators from both nations will work on a deal in the coming weeks. Trump stated that the White House has the concept of a new trade deal with Canada. According to UPI and PBS NewsHour, Carney stated on social media that the talk builds on recent discussions regarding a mutually beneficial agreement. The proposed deal aims to create jobs, lower costs for families, and protect the languages, culture, and sovereignty of Canada. [1][5]

Carney has served as the 24th prime minister of Canada and leader of the Liberal Party since 2025. A trade war between the two countries began on February 1, 2025, when President Trump imposed near universal 25 percent tariffs on goods from Canada, alongside a 10 percent tax on Canadian oil and energy. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Canada previously unveiled a 6.2 billion Canadian dollar package to protect its steel and auto sectors against these tariffs. [10][11][12]
