Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Friday after a bilateral summit in Montreal that Canada and the European Union aim to finish negotiations by June 2027 to make Canada the bloc's first associate member. Euronews reported the details, while ABC News, the Irish Examiner, and other outlets also reported that Carney expects talks to finish by June. [1][3][5][6]

The proposed status has no existing basis in EU treaties. Euronews reported that the novel arrangement is designed to deepen ties between the two partners across policy, governance, and programmes, though the specific practical details still require negotiation. Euronews added that Germany fiercely opposed using the term associate member ahead of the Montreal meeting. [1]

Relations between Canada and the European Union date back to the 1950s, with the bloc describing Canada as a global strategic partner. Carney took office as the 24th prime minister of Canada in 2025 after previously serving as governor of the Bank of Canada and governor of the Bank of England. [8][10]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, the European Union previously offered Canada associate membership to strengthen security and trade ties. Although FTMQ News reported on Thursday that the plan had been temporarily dropped ahead of the Montreal gathering, talks between Canada and the EU are now scheduled to continue toward the June 2027 target.
