Violetta Mailyan of Glendale, California, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for executing a Medicare fraud scheme worth more than 45 million dollars, the New York Post reported. A jury found the 45 year old doctor guilty of submitting fraudulent claims through her clinic, Healthy Way Medical Center. [1]
According to the New York Post, the claims involved Botox treatments that were medically unnecessary, strictly cosmetic, or never administered to patients. Evidence produced during the trial showed that more than 19 million dollars in claims involved injections allegedly performed on days when the clinic was closed. [1]
The New York Post reported that Mailyan used the funds stolen from taxpayers to finance luxury vacations, expensive vehicles, and a 12,000 dollar antique crossbow. [1]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, federal prosecutors have targeted several major healthcare fraud operations in recent weeks. A chiropractor in Oklahoma was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for a 30 million dollar fraudulent claims scheme, and an Illinois man pleaded guilty to a 227 million dollar Medicare COVID-19 test billing scheme.
