An Oklahoma chiropractor has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for his involvement in a 30 million dollar healthcare fraud scheme. UPI and KOKH both report that 39 year old Mark Loftis of Cushing was sentenced after targeting government healthcare programs. [1][2]
According to UPI, Loftis and his co-conspirators submitted over 30 million dollars in fraudulent claims for unnecessary medical equipment that patients did not need or want. The fraud scheme successfully collected more than 8 million dollars from public programs. [1]
The United States Department of Justice stated that the fraudulent claims targeted Medicare as well as programs serving military personnel and veterans. UPI reported that the affected programs included TRICARE and the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs, known as CHAMPVA. [1]
Federal prosecutors noted that Loftis paid more than 1 million dollars as part of the illegal arrangement. The case was formally announced by federal authorities on Friday following the sentencing. [1]
