Thirty-two years after the fall of apartheid, Black South Africans remain barred from living or working in the town of Orania, the Daily Mail reported. The enclave is located along the Orange River in the Karoo region of South Africa's Northern Cape province. [1]
According to the Daily Mail, entry to the hamlet of 3,000 inhabitants is exclusively granted to Afrikaners. The ethnic group descends predominantly from Dutch settlers who first arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652. Anyone with a criminal record is also banned from the settlement. [1]
The town covers 8,000 hectares of farmland, the Daily Mail reported. Apartheid was a system of institutionalised racial segregation that existed in South Africa from 1948 to 1994, ensuring political, social, and economic domination by the minority white population. Residents in Orania deny being racist and maintain that the streets remain safe at night. [1][11]
Longtime resident Frans de Klerk stated that he has spent the majority of his life in the secluded town and intends to die there, the Daily Mail reported. [1]
