The United Kingdom Home Office is facing criticism after revealing that a new safe route for Palestinian refugees will only cover people who have already fled Gaza to Lebanon or Jordan. The Guardian reported that the scheme will not be directly accessible to Palestinians who are currently inside the Gaza Strip. [1]
Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary, announced the reopening of the resettlement scheme at the Labour Party annual conference last month. According to the Guardian, the organisation running the scheme stated that only a very small number of individuals already located in Lebanon or Jordan will be referred for resettlement. Department statements indicate that around one in four referrals under the scheme will be for Afghan women and girls alongside Palestinian refugees. [1]
The Gaza war began on 7 October 2023 when the Palestinian militant group Hamas led an attack on Israel. The ongoing armed conflict takes place in the Gaza Strip and Israel as part of the broader Israeli Palestinian conflict. [2]
