The Bishop of Derry will petition the Holy See to immediately dismiss a priest who pleaded guilty to 109 sex offences at Derry Crown Court, RTE reported. [1]

Edward Gallagher, aged 59, pleaded guilty to charges including sexual communication with a child under 16 and possessing indecent images of a child, according to RTE. Gallagher, whose address was given as Maghaberry Prison, committed the offences between 22 June 2023 and 18 April 2025. [1]

In the canon law of the Catholic Church, the loss of clerical state refers to the removal of a member of the clergy from holy orders. [2]

Bishop Michael Router stated that Gallagher was immediately suspended from priestly ministry following his arrest, RTE reported. Gallagher is scheduled to be sentenced in December. [1]
