Television host Bill Maher offered a sharp critique of the Los Angeles mayoral election results on his show on Friday, according to the New York Post and Fox News. The election saw City Councilwoman Nithya Raman, a Democratic Socialist, defeat incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, the New York Post reported. Maher remarked to his studio audience that voters in Los Angeles get two choices, which he described as left or further left. [1][2]

Both general election candidates had been dogged by questionable track records, according to the New York Post. During the Friday broadcast of Real Time, Maher told guest Coleman Hughes that some people on the far left want communism, Fox News reported. Maher urged moderate Democrats to use their midterm election victories to reclaim control of the party, Fox News added. [1][2]

The election commentary follows a period of political tension for the television host. Variety reported that Maher celebrated democratic midterm election victories after previously dining with Donald Trump at the White House and later arguing with him publicly. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Trump released a lengthy Truth Social post criticizing Maher in October 2026, calling him a coward and a total loser after hosting him for dinner. [3][6]

William Maher is an American comedian and political commentator who hosts the HBO talk show Real Time with Bill Maher, which he has led since 2003. He was born in New York City in 1956 to an Irish Catholic father and a Jewish mother, and he was raised in New Jersey. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Maher has previously used his television program to criticize socialist political figures, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. [4][5][7]
