Australian department store chain David Jones has collapsed into voluntary administration after 188 years in business, putting thousands of jobs at risk. BBC News, The Guardian, and The Greek Herald all reported that the company entered administration following years of financial struggles and steep losses. [1][3][10]

The collapse occurred after 11th-hour negotiations between the retailer and its key landlord broke down. According to ABC News Australia and The Guardian, talks with Westfield owner Scentre Group collapsed over rent issues, leaving the future of the heritage retailer in jeopardy. [3][4][6]

McGrathNicol has been appointed as the voluntary administrator, while receivers FTI Consulting will review operations. BBC News and the Daily Mail both reported that David Jones's 38 physical stores and its online site will continue to operate during the review. [1][2]

David Jones was founded in 1838 by David Jones, a Welsh merchant, after he emigrated to Australia. It is recognised as the oldest continuously operating department store in the world still trading under its original name. Chief executive Erica Berthold stated that the brand has a plan to reset the business for the future. [1][2][13]
