Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced he will release details of his meetings with senior figures at Manchester City. The decision follows criticism of comments he made after the football club was found guilty of all charges relating to breaches of Premier League financial rules. BBC News and the BBC both reported the pledge on Sunday. [1][8]

An independent commission determined that Manchester City broke rules over a nine-year period between 2009 and 2018, according to BBC News. The commission found the club created sham contracts with commercial partners to secretly funnel more than £830m into their football operations. Al Jazeera reported that the breaches involved more than 100 financial rules. [1][4]

The ruling came as Manchester City prepared to travel to Anfield to play Premier League leaders Liverpool. BBC Sport, Al Jazeera, and the Daily Mail all reported that the club faced a highly hostile reception from Liverpool supporters, including banners, chants, and flares, in their first match since the verdict was announced. [2][4][7]

Burnham became Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party in July 2026. He previously served as Mayor of Greater Manchester from 2017 to 2026 before being elected as Member of Parliament for Makerfield in June 2026. [1][14]
