The Kips Bay AMC cinema on Second Avenue in Manhattan announced on October 13, 2026, that it wants to stay at its current site. As reported by the New York Post, the theater company stated it is being pushed out by NYU Langone Health to clear space for a medical facility expansion. [1]
According to spokesperson Ryan Noonan, the cinema operates successfully under its current lease terms and wishes to continue serving moviegoers. AMC disputed claims made by NYU Langone, which previously stated that the theater had been attempting to leave the location for years. [1]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal vowed to block the proposed medical expansion. NYU Langone Health also withdrew from a Community Board 6 meeting concerning the site. The New York Post previously noted that NYU Langone claimed AMC was considering closing prior to the medical center expressing interest. [4]
NYU Langone Health is an academic health system in New York and Florida that employs more than 55,000 people. The theater complex sits in the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan, near the Kips Bay Towers condominium complex completed in 1965. [2][3]
AMC expressed its belief that keeping the cinema open would be the best result for local guests and the surrounding Kips Bay community. [1]
