Duane Davis sentenced to 40 years to life for Tupac Shakur murder

Duane Davis, who is 63 years old, has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for orchestrating the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur. The New York Post, Variety, Pitchfork, and Reuters all reported that Davis was sentenced in a Nevada court on Tuesday. His sentencing comes after his first-degree murder conviction in August. According to Variety, the judge handed Davis 20 years to life for first-degree murder and an additional 20 years to life for a deadly weapon enhancement. The prosecution asked for the maximum possible prison sentence, as reported by the New York Post and Variety. [1][2]

Family members of Shakur gave statements to the court during the proceedings. Pitchfork reported that Shakur's sister, Sekyiwa, spoke of the emotional loss to her family, while his brother, Mopreme Shakur, noted that the rapper never got the chance to have children or watch his nieces and nephews grow up. The prosecution noted that Davis was the only person attempting to profit off the killing. [1][3]

Shakur was shot on September 7, 1996, while stopped at a red light in Paradise, Nevada, in a car driven by Death Row Records executive Suge Knight. Shakur was hit by four bullets fired from a Glock 22 pistol and died six days later from his injuries at age 25. His record sales exceeded 75 million units worldwide. [9][10]
