Alexander Zverev is guaranteed to finish the 2026 tennis season as the world number one player, according to BBC News and Al Jazeera. The German secured the top spot after seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz suffered a third-round defeat at the Shanghai Masters on Monday. [1][2]
Al Jazeera reported that the unseeded Belgian player Zizou Bergs defeated Alcaraz 7-5 7-6 (7-4) in a match that lasted two hours and two minutes. BBC News added that Alcaraz was the last player with a mathematical chance of stopping Zverev from claiming the top spot. BBC News also noted that Zverev described finishing the year on top of the rankings as a dream come true. [1][2]
Zverev was positioned to overtake current world number one Jannik Sinner because Sinner was ruled out for the rest of the year due to a knee injury, BBC News reported. Al Jazeera noted that Alcaraz had recently returned from a lengthy wrist injury layoff and had defended his Japan Open title before competing in Shanghai. [1][2]
Zverev reached a career-high ranking of world number two in June 2022 and has won 26 ATP Tour singles titles, including the 2026 French Open and the 2026 US Open [8]. Alcaraz previously finished as the ATP year-end number one player in 2022 and 2025 [9]. [8][9]
