Prime Minister Andy Burnham visited the Welsh village of Aberfan on Monday, October 19, ahead of the 60th anniversary of the disaster, BBC News reported. Burnham laid a wreath at the memorial garden alongside survivor Jeff Edwards and Welsh Secretary Stephen Kinnock. [1]
The visit marks the upcoming anniversary of the tragedy on October 21, 1966, when a colliery spoil tip collapsed. BBC News reported that 144 people were killed, including 116 children and 28 adults, after coal waste engulfed a local school. [1]
survivor Jeff Edwards was one of the last children brought out alive from the rubble, according to BBC News. Burnham described the event as one of the most horrifying tragedies the country has ever seen. [1]
On October 21, 1966, approximately 150,000 cubic metres of colliery spoil liquefied following heavy rain and flowed downhill. The avalanche engulfed Pantglas Junior School and surrounding buildings, as FTMQ News reported earlier. An inquiry attributed the disaster to negligence by the National Coal Board. [9][10]
