A Russian strike hit a second major bridge in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on Saturday morning, the BBC reported. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko stated that the attack on the Pivnichnyi Bridge injured two people. He added that Moscow is currently ramping up attacks on critical infrastructure in the capital of Ukraine. [1]

According to the BBC, the strike damaged the road surface and the overhead trolleybus wires on the Pivnichnyi Bridge. The damage caused traffic jams across the area, while technicians worked to repair the overhead trolleybus power lines. Russia stated that its drones had hit the two bridges. [1]

The attack on the Pivnichnyi Bridge comes after the Pivdennyi Bridge was hit multiple times by Russian drones earlier in the week, the BBC reported. Commenting on the repeated strikes against key infrastructure, Klitschko warned that the enemy is tearing Kyiv apart. [1]

Bridges have played a strategic and tactical role in the Russo-Ukrainian War, particularly since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Wikipedia describes. Ukraine contains more than 23,000 rivers and over 28,000 bridges, around which several battles, blocked advances, and political disputes have centered. [2]

Wikipedia notes that river crossing operations are likely to be among the most important determining factors in the course of the war, according to the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense. Successes and failures of various army units throughout the conflict have centered around the bridges of Ukraine. [2]
