The United States Department of Justice has opened an inquiry into former Department of Homeland Security official Corey Lewandowski over allegations that he profited from his government position, UPI, CNN, and the New York Times reported on October 22. Multiple media outlets including CBS News, ABC News, and the Wall Street Journal also reported that federal officials are reviewing claims of contracting misconduct involving the political operative. [1][2][3][6][7][8][9][10][11]

According to reports from UPI and ABC News, the federal investigation follows a criminal referral made by the Department of Homeland Security inspector general. Lewandowski served as the de facto chief of staff to former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. UPI reported that both Lewandowski and Noem were removed from the department in March after disclosures concerning internal infighting and spending. [1][10]

The New York Times reported that the exact details of the inquiry remain unclear. However, the newspaper noted that the probe represents a rare instance of a close ally or appointee of President Donald Trump coming under investigation for potential wrongdoing during his second term. [6]

Corey Ryan Lewandowski previously worked as a political commentator and served as the initial campaign manager for Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. The Department of Homeland Security is the federal executive department responsible for United States public security, border control, and national civil defense. [12][13]
