A congressional delegation from the United States will travel to Türkiye to attend the annual United Nations climate summit, Euronews reported on 5 November 2026. Representative Sean Casten, a Democratic lawmaker from Illinois, announced the trip a day after his party achieved a midterm election victory. [1]
Euronews reported that the 19-member delegation plans to explore opportunities for renewed United States engagement on energy, economic policy, and climate. Casten stated that the group would serve an important diplomatic function at COP31, which takes place in Antalya from 9 November to 20 November 2026. [1][3]
The official United States government is not participating in negotiations at the summit because President Donald Trump withdrew the nation from the Paris Agreement after returning to office. The United States previously withdrew from the international climate treaty in 2020, rejoined in 2021, and withdrew a second time in 2026. [1][2]
The Paris Agreement is a 2016 international climate treaty negotiated by 196 parties to cover mitigation, finance, and adaptation. COP31 is the 31st session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, hosted at the Expo Center in Antalya, Türkiye. As FTMQ News reported earlier, European Union ministers plan to connect the transition to clean energy with energy security during the COP31 summit. [2][3][5]
