Snow fell across parts of New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania as an unseasonal cold blast swept through south-eastern Australia on November 8, 2026. The Guardian reported that alpine resorts including Thredbo, Perisher, and Mount Hotham all recorded snowfalls. Snow also fell on kunanyi/Mount Wellington in Hobart. [1]

The snowfall was forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology, according to the Guardian. While springtime snow is uncommon, the outlet noted that it is not unprecedented, as many of the same locations experienced similar falls in November 2022. Social media users posted photos and videos of the unexpected snow across the affected regions. [1]

Snowfall in Australia is rare at sea level but regularly occurs on the highlands of the south-east, including New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory. Among state capitals, only Canberra, Hobart, and Melbourne have recorded snow. The unseasonal snowfall follows severe storm warnings issued for Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, and Brisbane in late October, as FTMQ News reported earlier. [2][4]
