Two thirds of Americans desire government aid for healthcare costs

Two thirds of Americans want the government to spend more money to reduce healthcare costs, according to new polling data released on Tuesday by Axios-Ipsos. The New York Post reported that the desire for government assistance includes half of Republicans, even as two thirds of Americans say they like their current health insurance. [1]

When asked about specific policies, 43 percent of respondents said they want Medicare for All, which would create a single-payer health system operated by the United States government. The New York Post reported that nearly a quarter, or 24 percent, oppose universal Medicare, while 32 percent said they were not sure. [1]

The proposal for a government-operated single-payer system remains deeply split along party lines. The New York Post reported that Medicare for All is popular with 62 percent of Democrats, many of whom favor establishing a similar system. [1]
