Nearly two thirds of registered voters in New York support ending the state income tax, according to the New York Post. A survey released on Tuesday by the Empire Center for Public Policy found that 64 percent of registered voters are ready to back abolishing the earnings tax. The report states that residents are fed up with carrying the highest combined state and local tax burden in the United States. [1]
The poll follows a proposal from Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman, who pitched a plan to effectively eliminate income taxes for most New York residents, the New York Post reported. New York currently has the third highest state income tax rate in the nation, which contributes to its overall tax burden. [1]
By comparison, Florida is one of nine states in the country that does not levy a state income tax, according to the New York Post. [1]
A majority is defined as more than half of a total. As FTMQ News reported earlier, separate polling in New York has recently tracked voter sentiments on city safety and political issues. [2][4]
