Tropical Storm Trudy formed in the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday and is expected to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane, according to reports from UPI, ABC News, Goshen News, and Yahoo. The National Hurricane Center placed the system about 490 miles south-southeast of Acapulco, Mexico, and roughly 780 miles southeast of Manzanillo, Mexico, during its 3 p.m. CST update, UPI reported. [1][6][7][9]
At the time of the advisory, UPI noted that Trudy had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was moving northwest at 8 mph. AOL.com added that the system could rapidly strengthen into a Category 4 hurricane. Although no watches or warnings were immediately issued, meteorologists urged residents along the coast of southwestern and west-central Mexico to track the storm, UPI reported. [1][8]
The development comes amid a destructive stretch for the region. As the Guardian reported, earlier weather systems including Hurricane Simon and Tropical Storm Rachel recently struck the Pacific coast of Mexico, killing at least five people, causing flash flooding, and damaging local infrastructure. Security forces had to use helicopters to rescue dozens of stranded residents, according to the Guardian. [3][4]
The current Pacific hurricane season officially began on May 15, 2026, and will run through November 30, 2026. The season has recorded the highest accumulated cyclone energy value in basin history, matching records with three Category 5 hurricanes. [10]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, heavy weather from earlier storms has caused severe impacts, including flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Rachel. Forecasters now advise residents in western Mexico to monitor Trudy as the system moves between the west-northwest and northwest over the Pacific, according to UPI. [1][12]
