Germany arrests Ukrainian national on suspicion of spying for Russia

Authorities in Germany arrested a Ukrainian national on Thursday, October 22, on suspicion of spying for Russia. Euronews, The Kyiv Independent, DW.com, and Al Arabiya English all reported the arrest of the suspect. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe announced the action following an investigation into suspected espionage. [1][2][5][7]

Federal prosecutors stated that the suspect, identified as Vadym Y., allegedly used contacts within the European defence industry to obtain sensitive information. Euronews reported that Vadym Y. had been in touch with a Russian intelligence service through an intermediary since at least July 2025. [1]

According to Euronews, the suspect gathered militarily relevant information and defence-related data for the Russian service in connection with the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. The arrest took place in the German state of Brandenburg. [1]

During the Russo-Ukrainian War, several individuals of various nationalities working for Russia have been identified as agents for Russian intelligence services. As FTMQ News reported earlier, German courts have previously prosecuted foreign espionage operations, including an Iranian plot targeting Jewish leaders. [11][14]
