Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has indicated that death row inmate Christa Pike will likely remain under her existing sentence despite surviving a botched lethal injection attempt. As reported by the New York Post and Fox News, Lee stated that Pike remains incarcerated under state laws and that he expects her sentence to stay the same unless courts determine otherwise. [1][2][5][6]

Pike, who is 50 years old, survived an attempt by Tennessee officials to execute her on September 30. As FTMQ News reported earlier, she survived receiving two doses of a lethal injection drug, pentobarbital, before being hospitalized and later returned to prison to continue her recovery. [1][2][10][11]

Fox News reported that a former Knoxville police chief recalled investigating the crime and described Pike as ruthless and almost giddy when recounting the event. Pike was convicted alongside her boyfriend for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old classmate Colleen Slemmer, who was beaten, slashed, and killed in a wooded area in Knoxville. [2][7][8]

Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 at age 20. That made her one of the youngest women to receive a death sentence in the United States following the 1976 reinstatement of capital punishment. She was set to be the first woman executed in Tennessee in over 200 years, according to the New York Post. [1][7][8]
