Death row inmate Christa Pike has been discharged from a local hospital and returned to prison medical care on Saturday, according to statements from her attorneys reported by the Daily Mail, BBC News, and the New York Post. The 50-year-old was moved to the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, where she has been held for more than 30 years, after surviving a failed execution attempt in Tennessee. [1][2][3][4]

BBC News and the New York Post reported that Pike spent over a week in critical condition after surviving two lethal injections of pentobarbital on September 30. Earlier this week, she regained consciousness and began speaking. Her attorneys stated that she is grateful to her medical team and first responders, and they noted that she will continue to receive medical treatment inside the prison facility. [2][3][4]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. According to the Death Penalty Information Center cited in earlier reports, Pike is the first inmate ever to survive lethal doses of execution drugs. Following the incident, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee suspended all executions in the state for the remainder of the year. [12][13][14]

Legal representatives for Pike are tracking her ongoing recovery, according to the New York Post. Her attorneys previously sought a court order to preserve all evidence related to the failed execution attempt, as FTMQ News reported earlier. [3][13]
