Swedish Social Democratic party leader Magdalena Andersson said on Tuesday that she has failed to form a government, Euronews and Reuters reported. Andersson stated that conditions are currently not in place to create a administration tolerated by parliament. She told reporters that progress had been made, but she remains unable to build a working government with three other left-wing parties. [1][3]
The announcement follows the general election on 13 September, in which the centre-left opposition bloc won 176 seats in parliament, Euronews reported. The outgoing right-wing bloc led by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson secured 173 seats. Kristersson's coalition includes the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats. [1]
The election chose 349 members of the Riksdag. The previous government under Kristersson was a coalition minority of the Moderate Party, the Christian Democrats, and the Liberals, backed externally by the Sweden Democrats under the Tido Agreement. [6]
Andersson serves as the Leader of the Opposition and has led the Swedish Social Democratic Party since 2021. She previously served as the first female Prime Minister of Sweden from 2021 to 2022, as well as Minister for Finance between 2014 and 2021. [5]
