European lawmaker Raphaël Glucksmann urged the French centre left on Monday morning to wage an existential battle to prevent Marine Le Pen and the far right from winning the 2027 French presidential election, the Guardian reported. The call followed his selection as the social democrat candidate for the presidency. [1]

Glucksmann made the comments after a decisive win in a primary race held by the Socialist party, according to the Guardian. Glucksmann, who is the founder of the small party Place Publique, urged supporters to rid their hearts of the spirit of defeat. [1]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, Glucksmann secured the nomination after winning 66 percent of the vote in the centre-left primary contest. Around 140,000 voters participated in the election, with Olivier Faure finishing second at 14 percent and Ségolène Royal placing third at 7 percent. [3]

The broader left wing in France previously formed the New Popular Front, an electoral alliance launched on June 10, 2024. The coalition brought together centre-left, left, and far-left factions to contest the 2024 French legislative election after far-right parties made gains in the European Parliament election. [2]
