Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald told Taoiseach Micheál Martin in the Dáil that any proposed changes to the Triple Lock neutrality mechanism should be decided by a referendum, the Irish Examiner reported. The call comes as opposition parties prepare to vote tomorrow against government legislation that seeks to amend the rules, according to RTÉ. [1][3]
Under the current Triple Lock system, deploying Irish Defence Forces troops overseas requires approval from the Government, the Dáil, and the United Nations. RTÉ noted that this rule applies when deploying more than 12 members of the armed forces overseas. The Irish Examiner reported that McDonald warned changing the system would fundamentally move Irish foreign policy away from neutrality. [1][3]
Opposition politicians have expressed concern over the planned removal of the UN mandate requirement and criticized the limited time allocated for parliamentary debate, according to the Irish Examiner. Large sections of the opposition view removing the UN approval requirement as an erosion of Irish neutrality, RTÉ reported. [1][3]
McDonald has served as President of Sinn Féin since February 2018 and has held the role of Leader of the Opposition in Ireland since June 2020. She has represented the Dublin Central constituency as a Teachta Dála since 2011. [4]
