Irish lawmakers in the Dáil, the lower house of parliament, voted on Wednesday to approve controversial legislation that scraps the requirement for United Nations approval before deploying military peacekeepers overseas, France 24 reported. [1]

The bill passed by a vote of 79 to 71. Opposition lawmakers warned that removing the veto mechanism threatens the longstanding military neutrality of Ireland, which is not a member of NATO, France 24 reported. [1]

The vote follows recent political friction over the proposed changes. As FTMQ News reported earlier, opposition politicians previously staged a protest inside the Dáil chamber against the government plans to amend the Triple Lock rules, holding up signs that read Save Neutrality until requested to put them away by Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy.
