Opposition TDs staged a protest inside the Dáil chamber on 20 October 2026 over government plans to amend Ireland's Triple Lock mechanism, the Irish Examiner and RTÉ reported. Politicians held up signs reading "Save Neutrality" following Leaders' Questions. [1][2]
The Irish Examiner and RTÉ both report that Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy intervened during the disruption, asking members to remove the signs. RTÉ noted that Murphy warned Sinn Féin and People Before Profit members that they were out of order before they put the paper signs away. [1][2]
According to the Irish Examiner, Sinn Féin TD Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire requested additional time to debate the proposed legislation. TDs from Sinn Féin, Labour, the Social Democrats, People Before Profit, and Independent TD Seamus Healy all participated in the sign protest. [1]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, changing the Triple Lock rules would alter the current requirement that Irish troop deployments overseas need approval from the Government, the Dáil, and the UN. Opposition parties have previously indicated that they plan to vote against the proposed changes. [5]
RTÉ reported that the Government is expected to bring forward the legislation to amend the Triple Lock on 21 October 2026. [2]
