Republicans are preparing to contest the election results in Alaska after allegations surfaced that Democratic candidate Mary Peltola's campaign recruited a spoiler candidate sharing the same name as Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, the Washington Examiner reported. The Washington Examiner noted that Alaska's state elections office could refuse to certify the race, which would leave the final result uncertain if Peltola is named the presumptive winner. Senate Republicans may also object to seating Peltola in the new Congress if she wins. [1]

The controversy follows a report by The New York Times alleging that Peltola's campaign secretly recruited another candidate named Dan Sullivan to siphon votes away from the incumbent Senator. According to the New York Post, Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy ordered a state investigation into whether members of Peltola's campaign should face criminal charges over the scheme. The Washington Examiner and CNN both reported that the Justice Department launched a criminal investigation into the ballot situation. [1][3][4][8][9]

In response to the report, Sullivan released a minute-long advertisement highlighting clips and text about the recruitment efforts, according to the Washington Examiner. Fox News reported that Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski broke a four-year silence on X to criticize Peltola's team for ballot manipulation. As FTMQ News reported earlier, President Donald Trump previously suggested that Senate Republicans could refuse to seat Peltola if she wins. [4][5][6][7][11]

The fallout from the investigation threatens to prolong the battle for control of the Senate. The Washington Examiner reported that the state elections office could make a determination on the presumptive winner next week. [1]
