Republican lawmakers are opposing United States President Donald Trump over his decision to temporarily relax sanctions and import diesel fuel from Russia. Al Jazeera and Reuters reported that United States Senator Thom Tillis questioned the legality of the agreement on Sunday. Tillis stated during an interview on NBC News that there is a legitimate case that President Trump is not following the law. [1][9]

According to the Washington Examiner, Representative Brian Fitzpatrick announced he will introduce bipartisan legislation to block all purchases of Russian oil. The Washington Examiner and Al Jazeera reported that the backlash stems from members of the Republican Party who continue to support Ukraine in its war against Russia. Trump enacted the sanctions relief to reduce record high fuel prices caused by the war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. [1][2]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, President Trump recently announced the diesel deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin. That announcement was followed by Russian bombardments on Zaporizhzhia and a Ukrainian drone strike on a fuel facility in the Rostov region of Russia. [15]

The latest friction adds to broader domestic and international criticism over President Trump's foreign policy actions. According to rte.ie, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russian strikes hit multiple Ukrainian power plants despite claims by Trump that both sides had agreed to refrain from targeting energy infrastructure.
