The Office of Rail and Road has rejected proposals for new direct train services linking London with Wrexham and Rochdale, as reported by the Guardian and RailAdvent. The rail regulator also vetoed plans for extra train services between London and Blackpool. [1][2]

The regulator stated that there is insufficient space on the crowded West Coast Main Line to accommodate the proposed routes. According to the Guardian, the rejected expansion included additional London to Blackpool services requested by operator Avanti. [1]

The Office of Rail and Road had already turned down plans last year for a new independent open-access rail service connecting London to Wrexham, the Guardian reported. Open-access operator Virgin Trains has also previously proposed running services on the West Coast Main Line between London, Rochdale, and other major cities. [1][4]

Wrexham is home to Wrexham Association Football Club, which was founded in 1864 and is the oldest professional football club in Wales. Rochdale is historically known as the birthplace of the modern cooperative movement, which was established by local weavers in 1844. [3][5]
