Rival political parties are gearing up for a potential byelection in the Essex constituency of Clacton in the months ahead, the Guardian reported. The preparations come amid speculation that a parliamentary standards inquiry into a 5 million pound gift received by Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is nearing its end. [1][3]
Conservative Party sources said the party is ready to contest the seat, according to the Guardian. However, senior figures in the shadow cabinet remain divided over whether the constituency is winnable following the victory of Farage in a previous byelection over the summer. [1]
Other political groups are also expected to field candidates in the Clacton seat if a contest is called, the Guardian reported. These include the hard right Restore Britain party, which did not stand in the previous contest. [1]
Farage has led Reform UK since June 2024. The party sits to the right of the Conservative Party and currently holds eight seats in the House of Commons, alongside members in the Senedd, the Scottish Parliament, and the London Assembly. [3]
The potential contest follows separate inquiries into the party. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Reform UK conducted an internal investigation into discussions regarding foreign donations, while the Metropolitan Police launched a separate criminal investigation into the party. [4]
