Police in England and Wales recorded 17,907 offences of indecent exposure or voyeurism last year, marking the highest total ever recorded. The Daily Mail reported on October 11 that Home Office figures show only 2,474 of these cases resulted in a suspect being charged and brought before a court. [1]
According to the Daily Mail, the remaining 15,433 cases did not result in prosecution. The outlet reported that criminals escaped justice because they were either never located by police or managed to avoid receiving a criminal record after being caught. [1]
The low prosecution rates for sexual offences come amid wider concerns regarding criminal justice performance. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley previously raised concerns over public safety risks caused by early releases of violent offenders and domestic abusers, noting that the Metropolitan Police manage about 100 electronic tag condition breaches every day.
