A record 275 people were in prison for terror offences in Britain at the end of June, according to the Daily Mail. Home Office figures show that this total represents a seven per cent increase compared to the previous year. Most of those incarcerated hold Islamist extremist views. [1]

The new figure is the highest recorded since data collection started in 2010, when 126 people were held for terror offences, the Daily Mail reported. The June figure surpasses the previous peak of 273 recorded at the end of March. [1]

Terrorism is broadly defined as the use of violence against non-combatants to achieve political or ideological aims. Authorities use the concept to refer to intentional violence meant to instill fear beyond the immediate victims. [2]
