Two University of Maryland student reporters had police called on them while standing outside the team football facility on Wednesday, Fox News reported. The incident occurred shortly after the athletic department announced it was parting ways with head football coach Mike Locksley following a five-game losing streak, according to Fox News. [1]

The New York Post and CBS Sports both report that Locksley left his position on Wednesday in what the school described as a mutual decision. Co-defensive coordinator Aazaar Abdul-Rahim will serve as the interim head coach while the university conducts a national search for a replacement, according to the New York Post. [2][7]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, Maryland started the 2026 college football season with a 2-5 record after five consecutive losses. Locksley had recorded a 39-54 overall record during his head coaching tenure with the Terrapins. [17]

Fox News reported that players gathered at the facility for a team meeting on Wednesday morning after news of the coaching change broke. Locksley, 59, previously won the Broyles Award in 2018 and has more than 30 years of college coaching experience, according to CBS Sports. [1][4]

The school said that a comprehensive national search for the next head coach will begin immediately, according to the New York Post. [2]
