The New South Wales government plans to introduce special legislation to allow the Mount Pleasant coalmine to increase its production by 32 percent per year, the Guardian and UA.NEWS reported. The site is located in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. [1][2]

According to the Guardian, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns stated that the bill will permit MACH Energy to raise annual coal output by 4 million tonnes. This expansion will bring total output at the mine to 16.5 million tonnes per year until 2032. [1]

The Guardian reported that the mine was recently the subject of landmark High Court proceedings. Critics have described the proposed bill as legislative overreach, while Premier Chris Minns claimed the decision was required to protect 400 jobs. [1]
