Passengers landing at Lisbon airport can now pay fixed fares for taxi journeys starting from Thursday. Euronews reported that the measure aims to resolve long-standing issues with driver scams and inflated prices. [1]

The flat rate system follows an agreement signed in September. Euronews reported that passengers previously faced problems including drivers refusing short trips, insisting on cash payments, using tampered taximeters, and taking longer routes to increase fares. [1]

The practice had drawn public criticism from both local residents and foreign visitors. In August, a Dutch citizen living in Portugal publicly labeled the airport taxi service a tourist trap in a social media video, according to Euronews. [1]

Lisbon is one of the oldest urban centers in Western Europe, dating back to Phoenician traders in the eighth century BCE. The city later served as the main hub for Portuguese maritime trade during the Age of Discoveries. [4]
