A Kerry man has been told by the Special Criminal Court that he cannot receive a further adjournment in his trial regarding crystal meth, RadioKerry.ie reported. [1]
In a separate case at the same court on Monday, Daniel Kinahan appeared via video link charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation between 18 October 2015 and 6 April 2017, according to The Journal and thejournal.ie. The Journal reported that Kinahan, wearing glasses and a dark jumper, said he could hear and see the court proceedings. [2][3]
A defence barrister stated that Belfast solicitor Darragh Mackin from Phoenix Law intends to represent Kinahan, but Mackin did not attend the hearing due to unexpected circumstances, The Journal and RTE.ie reported. The Irish Times reported that the case was adjourned for one week to allow the solicitor to formally apply to represent him. [2][3]
Kinahan was arrested in the United Arab Emirates on 15 April on foot of an Irish arrest warrant, as reported by The Journal. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Kinahan was extradited to Ireland on 9 July. [2][6]
The Special Criminal Court is a juryless tribunal in Dublin that handles terrorism and serious organised crime cases. It was first established under the Offences Against the State Act 1939 and was reconstituted in 1972. [4][5]
